Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure

LASIK (Laser Insitu Keratomileusis), is a highly successful and popular procedure for vision correction that has been available for about 15 years. An older procedure, PRK (Photo refractive Keratotomy), is the least popular, as treatment is painful, vision can take several months to recover and only one eye can be treated at a time. LASIK is a quick and virtually painless procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis.

The Lasik eye surgery process:

  • Create a thin-hinged flap on the cornea (front of the eye) with a precise surgical instrument called a microkeratome.
  • The flap is carefully folded back then the tissue of the cornea is then re-shaped by a special laser.
  • After the treatment, the flap is gently folded back into its original position and heals naturally, without the need for stitches. A contact lens is placed on the for the first 24 hours to protect the cornea.

The actual procedure takes only a few minutes for each eye and both eyes are treated at the same time in the large majority of cases.
